Meat & Poultry Processing Wastewater Treatment
Extreme FOG, blood and protein loads — removed before they reach your permit. DAF systems engineered for processing plants, sized from your sample.
What Is in Meat & Poultry Wastewater
Slaughter and processing plants produce some of the strongest wastewater in the food industry. Blood, fat, feathers, skin, meat fines, manure from receiving and sanitation chemicals all reach the drain. Poultry plants add massive chiller and scalder volumes. Rendering adds concentrated fat and protein.
Dissolved air flotation is the industry standard for primary treatment of this stream. It is one of the only technologies that consistently reaches the FOG removal NPDES permits and sewer surcharge structures demand, because fat and blood protein float readily once conditioned.
Why Processing Plants Face the Biggest Surcharges
Meat and poultry effluent can carry BOD and FOG at ten or more times typical sewer limits, at volumes measured in millions of gallons per day. Surcharges, grease enforcement and loading caps follow. Direct dischargers face federal effluent guidelines for meat and poultry products on top of their NPDES permit.
Plants that add shifts or lines often find the wastewater system is the constraint on growth. Reliable primary treatment removes that constraint.
Processing Plant Pretreatment With Micro-Bubble DAF
Our micro-bubble generator produces bubbles fine enough to capture coagulated blood protein and emulsified fat. With chemistry selected by jar testing, a DAF Corp system delivers consistent removal from first shift through sanitation.
- FOG removal of 95–99% and TSS removal of 90–98%
- Major BOD reduction from fat, blood and protein capture
- 316 stainless, HDPE and corrosion-resistant alloys for aggressive streams
- Float with high protein and fat value for rendering
We are straightforward about scope: soluble BOD and ammonia pass through a clarifier. Direct dischargers need biological treatment after the DAF. For plants discharging to a municipal sewer, DAF typically delivers the surcharge and grease relief — and for direct dischargers it removes the fat that would otherwise upset the biology.
Beef, Pork, Poultry and Rendering
We have designed systems for beef, pork, lamb and poultry operations of all sizes, plus further-processing and rendering facilities. Screening, equalization, chemistry and clarifier sizing are tuned for each — high-volume chiller water in poultry, high-fat kill floors in red meat, concentrated streams in rendering.
Typical Meat & Poultry Processing Wastewater
| Parameter | Why it matters | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| BOD | From blood, fat and protein. | 1,000–8,000 mg/L |
| Fats, oils & grease | DAF's primary target in this industry. | 500–5,000 mg/L |
| Suspended solids (TSS) | Meat fines, feathers and manure solids. | 500–4,000 mg/L |
| Total Kjeldahl nitrogen | From blood and protein; drives biological design. | 100–600 mg/L |
| Water use (poultry) | Sets design flow. | About 5–10 gal per bird |
| Temperature | Warm streams keep fat emulsified. | 70–110°F |

How We Size a Poultry DAF System
Poultry plants are sized from birds processed and water used per bird. In this illustrative example, a plant processing 200,000 birds per day at 7 gallons per bird discharges 1.4 million gallons over a 20-hour day.
An FC 300 carries the peak and removes several tons of fat and solids per day before they reach the sewer or biological system. Your bird count, water use and lab results set the final design.
FC Maximizer models run from the FC 40 at 22 GPM to the FC 700 at 8,850 GPM with 25% recycle — see the full FC Maximizer sizing table.
| Birds processed | 200,000 per day |
|---|---|
| Water use | 7 gal per bird |
| Daily wastewater | 1.4 million gal |
| Average / design flow (peak 1.2) | 1,170 / 1,400 GPM |
| Selected clarifier | FC 300 — 1,500 GPM with 25% recycle |
| Influent FOG / TSS | 1,000 / 1,200 mg/L |
| FOG removed (97%) | About 11,300 lb/day |
| TSS removed (93%) | About 13,000 lb/day |
Proven in Processing Plants
DAF Corp has designed systems for beef, pork, lamb and poultry operations, from small processors to high-volume plants. The pattern is consistent: extreme fat loads, corrosive water, a permit that doesn't flex, and a DAF system sized from a lab analysis of the plant's worst-case stream — not an average.
Start With a Free Lab Analysis
Send us a sample of your worst-case wastewater and your discharge limits. We jar-test it, and typically within 5–10 business days return a system specification and budgetary proposal — including what DAF will and won't do for your stream. Micro Bubbles. Massive Results.
